Air Systems for Plastics
Of the various elements required to make a PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) bottle plant operate successfully, high-pressure air is one of the most important. PET plants often have banks of in-house air compressors, perhaps with as many as six or more units running at any given time. The design of these predominately reciprocating compressors requires that they undergo extensive routine maintenance to ensure continued operation at optimum levels.
PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is used to make many products, such as soda bottle, polyester fabric, cable wraps, films, transformer insulation, generator parts, and packaging. It makes up 6.4 percent of all packaging and 14 percent of all plastic containers, including the popular soft drink bottle. Accounting for 43 percent of those sold, PET is the most widely used soft drink container. Aluminum, a close second, is 34 percent, while glass, which used to be 100 percent of the bottles, is only a small percentage of those sold today.
This combination of properties has opened up new and important markets, PET has become the favored material in number of applications, notably for projects and equipment for carbonated and non-carbonated soft drinks, mineral water, vegetable oils and vinegar.
But the new generation of applications is covering a still more extensive range of detergents and cleaning products, wines and other alcoholic drinks, fruits juices, certain conserves sauces, ketchup and mustard, cosmetic and pharmaceutical products, industrial paints and oils chemical products etc.
